To Earl BATHURST,
The nature of this address must be the apology of a clergyman who though a perfect stranger to your Lordship yet ventures to write to you.
It was intimated to him some time since that it was the intention of Government to procure a Chaplain of the Established Church to accompany settlers to the Cape of Good Hope. Should such be their intention the writer would be happy to hold such appointment provided the stipend &c for his services should be adequate to the duty performed. Testimonials &c from his Bishop & parishioners would of course be required by you and procured by
