Nottingham Castle Gatehouse. In the Middle Ages the Castle was a major royal fortress and occasional royal residence. In decline by the 16th century, it was largely demolished in 1649 after the Civil War, but some medieval stonework can be seen in the gatehouse. The Castle Rock would have been a common sight for the Nottingham settlers.
