BARRATH. – Passed peacefully away at 41 Cawood Street. On the 30th June, 1945, Vernon Basil, dearly beloved baby of Theresa and Kistra BARRATH, at the age of three years and 10 months. Interred South End Cemetery, on Sunday 1st July, 1945.

S.A. PIONEERS DEATH.
Kimberley, Monday.
Mr H. HIRSCHEL-COHEN, an associate of Cecil RHODES and Barney BARNATO in the early days of the diamond fields, died in Kimberley, to-day after a short illness at the age of 86.
Mr HIRSCHEL-COHEN was a one-time partner of Sir Percy FITZPATRICK and one of the discoverers of Barberton, where he also became editor of the first Barberton newspaper. He was a financial expert and amateur historian, and was at one time secretary of the company which started the electricity service in Pretoria, where he became a friend of President Kruger. He was also auditor to the old African Banking Corporation. In his latter years he was associated with the "Diamond News", which he enlivened with his reminiscences of the early pioneering days. He had travelled twice around the world.

A Pretoria message says that the King has appointed Temporary Colonel Clarence Selwyn SMITH, of Port Elizabeth, a South African officer seconded to the British Forces, to be an officer of the Military Division of the Order of the British Empire, in recognition of "gallant and distinguished services in North West, Europe."
Colonel SMITH is serving with the Allied Military Government in Holland and recently he was mentioned in dispatches in connection with his work on behalf of Amgot.

STRANG. – Maria J. widow of the late J.S. STRANG, passed away at 5, 3rd Avenue, Walmer, on the 16th instant, in her 50th service in St Saviour's Church, Villiers Road, Walmer, this (Friday) afternoon at 4 o'clock, thence the funeral will proceed to the South End Cemetery.
VARDY. – Ernest Frere, died at Johannesburg of pneumonia, on 13th August, 1945, third son of the late Mr W.E. VARDY of Port Elizabeth.
