SUICIDE. Yesterday morning about 9 o’clock, Sergt. MACDONNEL of the Royal Artillery put an end to his existence by shooting himself through the head with a loaded musket. The rash act is attributed to the operation of unhappy feelings, produced by too great excitement. He was a very fine, soldierly young man, much beloved by his comrades, and his death has cast a gloom over their small Society.

DIED at Simon’s Town, John OSMOND Jun, aged 30 years. In January 1833 he ruptured a blood vessel, which being followed by others of the same nature brought on a consumption, which terminated his life, to the great grief of family and friends, on the 6th inst.

NEWS FROM THE FRONTIER
...The party here have collected 1340 head of cattle, besides a numerous flock of sheep. This is considered a prize too tempting to be given up without a struggle, and the little garrison in the Bathurst church are waiting with great confidence the result. Since the intelligence was received, further information has reached us from this quarter, which states that the savages were rapidly carrying on the work of destruction. Within the preceding day or two a great number of buildings are announced as having been fired and destroyed, amongst which are the Wesleyan Chapel at Port Frances, Mr. RERRINGTON’s inn, [sic – should probably be BERRINGTON] Lieut. GILFILLAN’s, the Chapel at COCK’s Party, Mr. J. JAMES’ residence, Mr. MILES’, Mr. DENTON’s. Mr. USHER’s, Mr. HOLT’s, Mr. COCKCROFT’s, Mr. MOUNCEY’s, Mr. HEWSON’s and numerous others. The Caffers finding themselves hitherto foiled in their attempts to carry off the cattle have now commenced to destroy the pasturage by burning, as this will necessarily oblige the herds to proceed to a greater distance for grass, a better opportunity will be afforded for carrying them off, than when in the immediate neighbourhood of the village...

Robert JOHNSTONE Esq, Dep. Ass. Commissary General, who died early on Tuesday morning last week, was aged 39; he had served in the Commissariat above 20 years, his present commission bearing date in 1814, since which (with the exception of about 4 months) he has been on full pay. He served several years in the Peninsular War – at Waterloo – and with the army of occupation. His companions remember him foremost during three campaigns. There are those who have seen him dash into town amongst a flying enemy, to be the first to obtain supplies.
Subsequently, at the Cape of Good Hope, he was distinguished by the charge of the Posts on the Frontier, where he had, in performance of duty, long and dangerous journies to perform; during one of these excursions his horse fell with him in a river, breaking several of his ribs, which for want of proper assistance never closed. An attack of the liver complainst terminated his existence.
In life he was cheerful and pleasing, of retired habits, generous and faithful as a friend – Sco in [sic – Scotland?] can show but few of the sons who have been more deservedly esteemed. He has left a young widow, whom he married at the Cape of Goode Hope, to deplore his loss. His interment took place yesterday week; it was attended by His Excellency the Lieut. Governor, Col. LEAHY, AC, G. MOODIE and all the Military and Staff Officers, with a numerous assemblage of Civil Officers of the Colony, and a military party from the 21st or Royal Fusiliers, who fired three volleys over his grave.

For the Relief of the Destitute Sufferers in the Eastern Districts by the Caffer Invasion.
At a meeting of a number of Gentlemen convened by an advertisement in the South African Commercial Advertiser of the 4th instant, and held yesterday at the Committee Room of the Commercial Exchange, it was resolved:
That immediate application be made to Government for permission to form themselves into a Committee for the Relief of the Destitute Sufferers in the Eastern Districts by the Caffer Invasion, and that the following gentlemen do form the Committee:

DIED on the 12th ultimo, John Francis GOODWIN Esq, aged 27 years, deeply and deservedly lamented by all who knew him. He was killed in action with the Caffers in the Fish River Bush, having on the previous night joined the Forces under Colonel SMITH as a volunteer, and fell in covering the retreat of a person who had been wounded.
