We are sorry to learn that the South African College is in difficulties – not for want of money but for professors and pupils. We fear its course was too far in advance of the present generation. When the new schools have been in operation for two or three years it will probably revive in the natural course of things, and then flourish permanently.

FATAL ACCIDENT. THREE MEN DROWNED.
On Wednesday last a fishing-boat, containing five men, was struck by a large fish (Humpback) off Hamberg Point, Table Bay, and instantly swamped, the men being thrown into the water with great violence. One of the men, John DANIELSE, being an excellent swimmer, having risen to the surface, exerted all his strength in an attempt to save his comrades, and succeeded in bringing two of them back to the boat, which still floated, though full of water. Here they remained clinging to the boat from about 4 o’clock in the afternoon to 8 o’clock, when a boat came to their relief; but unhappily about 5 minutes previous to its arrival, John DANIELSE, entirely exhausted, relinquished his hold, and sank. The two survivors were brought ashore.
John DANIELSE, we are informed, has left a widow and a family of five children, the oldest eight years of age, the youngest 15 months, besides two adopted children, also dependent upon her. He was a man of excellent character.
This case we feel justified in recommending earnestly to the Public as one in which their liberality will fall on very appropriate objects – the widow, the fatherless and the orphan. It is becoming, also, to let the class of men to which the deceased belonged understand that the public are not insensible to the dangers incident to their highly useful profession – that they sympathize with those who suffer in their service – and that they are ready to throw the shield of their humanity over their bereaved and destitute families. A Subscription has already been opened for this purpose, and we know the generous feelings of our readers too well to say more than that it has been laid for signature in the Commercial Rooms.

DEATH OF MRS. BOURHILL
With deep regret we have just learned that Mrs. BOURHILL, the excellent Superintendent of the Female Juvenile Emigrants, died yesterday morning at Victoria Lodge. In her, the Children’s Friend Society has lost a most faithful and judicious Associate in their benevolent labors, and the poor children an affectionate friend and mother.

FATAL AFFRAY
On Thursday night, or early on Friday morning, some tumult or disorderly proceedings being observed on the Parade, the police interfered, when unfortunately a young man named ROBERTS (recently from England), received a wound in his thigh, inflicted by the sword of one of the policemen, of which he almost immediately bled to death, the femoral artery having been divided. The Police ought not to carry swords. How comes it that so monstrous a custom has existed so long?

THE EMIGRANT FARMERS
The following disastrous intelligence has been transmitted to us by a correspondent at Colesberg. It is stated to be a translation of a letter addressed by Mr. J.J. BURGHER to the Commandant A. PRETORIUS, who was at the time of the disaster in the Zoola territories.
Pietermaritzburg, 2nd June 1839
“Sir, It is with great grief I have to acquaint you with the following awful calamity which took place yesterday in the camp of Commandant Jacobus POTGIETER. A hut belonging to Thomas STEENKAMP caught fire, the flame of a candle having communicated with the thatch, and it was speedily reduced to ashes. There happening to be a great quantity of gunpowder in the centre of the camp, self preservation became the ruling passion, and everyone attempted to escape by the best means that at the moment were presented. Saving any thing from the destructive element was out of the question, and the whole encampment is almost without clothing. But alas! it is with poignant sorrow that I have to communicate to you that the attempts of several unfortunate beings to escape from the raging element were ineffectual, and they fell a sacrifice to its devouring ravages. The names of the persons who thus perished are – Piet POTGIETER Sen, Jan Herman STEENKAMP Janz, Jacobus Christoffel STEENKAMP Janz, Barend VAN DER VENTER Sen, two children of Christoffel JORDAN and three colored persons. Besides these, there are several still alive who are literally half burnt. Their names are Thomas STEENKAMP, Philip STEENKAMP, Philip POTGIETER, Hermanus STEENKAMP, Mrs. STEENKAMP Sen, Gideon VAN DER VENTER and two children of P. POTGIETER’s.
When we heard the explosion at our camp we concluded it to be an attack of the Zoolas and prepared ourselves accordingly. It has been since proposed that two thousand rix dollars of clothing be purchased from the ‘Handel Maatschappy’, at six months’ credit, to be appropriated for the use of the sufferers, and that a subscription be opened immediately to defray the expense of the same.” – Graham’s Town Journal.

MELANCHOLY DEATH OF CAPT. COX
Information has just been received in town of the death, by accident, of Capt. COX, late Commander of the Hope Steamer. The circumstances attending his death are most distressing. He was travelling between Cradock and Colesberg, in company with Mr. Louis NORTON of this place, when the fatal catastrophe occurred, the particulars of which are stated as follows, in a letter before us:
“Messrs. NORTON and COX had left the wagon for the purpose of shooting, and the former having fired at some bucks, dismounted to reload his gun. Capt. COX was then close by his side. Having loaded, NORTON handed COX an orange, and was in the act of remounting his horse when the hammer of his gun caught the flap of his saddle, and it went off. COX was at this moment about four yards in front, and the ball entered his back and completely fractured the back-bone. He did not live five minutes after he received the shot. He was buried here (Cradock) on Friday last.”

DEATH OF ENSIGN HARDING
Of the Cape Mounted Rifle Corps
On the morning of the 5th instant, Ensign HARDING, who had accompanied Col. SOMERSET to the mouth of the Fish River, was bathing on the beach with Lieuts. McLEAN and FANSHAWE, and Ensign SOMERSET; when venturing too far (the tide running out very strong at the time) he was carried out by the violence of the surf, before it was possible any assistance could be rendered to him. Lieutenant McLEAN nearly shared the same fate, having been thrown on shore by the surf quite insensible.
Ensign HARDING joined the army in the month of February 1835; having been appointed a Provisional Ensign in the Cape Mounted Rifle Corps – with which Corps he did his duty during the whole of the active period of the Kafir War. He remained attached to the Corps, until he was appointed Ensign by purchase, in the 75th Regiment, in the early part of the present year. During the period he served with the 75th Regiment his excellent conduct endeared him to all his brother officers, and he was much noticed and esteemed by his Commanding Officer, Lieut-Colonel GRIEVE.
In the month of March of this year he was again removed to the Cape Mounted Rifle Corps, where he was received with affection by his old brother officers. By his Commanding Officer, Colonel SOMERSET, he was beloved as a son, and by his family he was cherished as a brother. Few young men ever obtained more justly the regard and respect of all who were acquainted with him. Above all, he was a devour Christian.
It has pleased the Almighty to call to himself this lamb of his flock, in the flower and pride of youth and beauty, in the 22nd year of his age. May we all, when called to our last account, be as prepared to meet our awful trial, as was this beloved and truly Christian youth.
