South African Commercial Advertiser 1848 - 3 - July to September

Saturday 1 July 1848

BIRTH at George on the 17th June, the lady of J.A. DREYER Esq MD of a daughter.

(Communicated)
Died at Missionary Institution, Pacaltadorp, on the 22nd June after a very short illness, Mrs. Johanna Maria ANDERSON, the excellent and beloved wife of the Revd. Wm. ANDERSON, aged 72 years. This truly devoted and exemplary woman had shared with her now bereaved and mourning partner for the long period of 42 years in the toils and anxieties attendant upon his missionary labours; first, amongst the then lawless tribes of Griquas and others north of the Orange River; and for the last 26 years at the above-named Institution, where she exerted herself in every possible way to promote the present and future welfare of its inhabitants. Her bereaved partner and family feel keenly the heavy loss they have sustained, while at the same time they are consoled by the assurance that for her to die is everlasting gain. Her mortal remains were committed to the ground on Saturday the 24th instant, on which occasion an appropriate address was delivered in the church by the Rev J.T. GREGOROWSKI and prayer was offered at the grave by the Rev T. ATKINSON. A large number of the inhabitants of George Town came over on the mournful occasion to testify their high regard for the deceased, and their sympathy with the mourning family under their irreparable loss. On the following Sabbath morning the solemn event was improved in a discourse on Revelation 14:13 by the Rev T. Atkinson.

THE REV JAMES KITCHINGMAN
The following communication announces the loss of a most excellent man and an invaluable Missionary.
The London Missionary Society has again to deplore the loss of a faithful and laborious Agent. The Rev James KITCHINGMAN of Bethelsdorp departed this life the 25th ult in the fifty sixth year of his age. Upwards of thirty years this eminent Christian, and indefatigable Missionary, had devoted to the evangelization of the heathen in Southern Africa. Possessed of the entire confidence and warm affection of the people who were favoured with his services, it was his privilege to see his ministrations of the gospel crowned with a large measure of success, a result which was doubtless in a considerable degree to be attributed to the beautiful exemplification in his own conduct, spirit and conversation of those holy principles which it was the grand object of his life to inculcate on his fellow creatures. His extraordinary meekness and humility, together with his characteristic prudence and integrity, secured the esteem, affection and confidence of all who were privileged with his acquaintance. The people of his charge, among whom he had faithfully and efficiently dispensed the Word of Life, during the long period of seventeen years, deeply deplore the loss of their beloved pastor, while his surviving brethren in the Missionary field are very sensible that they have been bereaved of a wise counsellor and an affectionate friend.
