South African Commercial Advertiser 1851 - 4 - October to December
Wednesday 3 September 1851
BIRTH at Rajkote, Bombay Presidency, the lady of Major W. BLENKINS CB of a son.
DR. PHILIP
The decease of this aged member of Colonial society, at the present time, will call to reverent remembrance much more than the merely personal associations connected with his long and honored career.
From the tomb his voice seems now to call upon the colonists, and those who hold authority among them, to give heed to the doctrines which it was the work of his life to inculcate. An ambassador of his Divine Master among men, he cared chiefly in this to imitate that Master – to be deterred by the meanness of no man’s state, and by no supposed degradation of social or national rank in which he found his fellow men, from declaring that the rights of human beings were beyond alienation by man.
It was his privilege to be one of the most earnest teachers, to the varied population of South Africa, of the mighty truth with which the Apostles first combated the class distinctions of their age, when they preached that God “who giveth to all life, and breath and all things, hath made of one blood all nations of men, for to dwell on all the face of the earth.”
This truth has not been vainly inculcated in this land: and Dr. PHILIP survived the struggles with which it needed first to be enforced, and lived to witness that it was received among many who long gave it resistance. May this truth, in the influences of it most extended application, for ever remain the worthiest memorial in this country of those whose lives were devoted to its establishment!
(Communicated)
Intelligence has just reached this colony of the death of Charles TUCKER Esq, one of the oldest and most respected civil servants of the Bengal Presidency. He died at his residence in Park-street, Calcutta on the 18th June last. He retired to Calcutta about a year ago, apparently restored to perfect health, after having sojourned here for some time. His kindliness of manners and generosity of heart endeared him to a large circle of friends, and he was beloved by all those who really knew his many virtues and amiable traits of character.

DIED at his Residence in St.George’s-street in his 31st year, Francis Le Sueur FLECK Esq MD M.R.C.S.L, deeply regretted.
Cape Town, 18th October 1851.
THE LATE DR FRANCIS FLECK
This accomplished member of the Medical Profession at the Cape departed this life on Friday night last, at the early age of 30 years.
Although the delicate state of Dr. FLECK’s health had for some time prepared his friends for this dispensation of Divine Providence, yet they continued, until very recently, to indulge much hope that they and his afflicted family would be spared their present early bereavement. They part with his presence among them in reverent submission to the Divine Will, and yet with the feelings which the respectful estimation in which they held him could not fail to have awakened. His name will long be cherished by them in most affectionate remembrance.
Dr. Francis FLECK returned to the Cape from his studies in [France towards the ?? of 1845– best guess from line partially obscured in paper fold] ..Government for the Kafir War, and was attached to the Hottentot Levies from Swellendam, of which Major HOGGE was then Commandant. On this expedition, on which he served for several months, it is believed that a constitution not naturally strong received a shock by which it was ever after affected. After his return to town he entered into private practice, and continued to be engaged in the active duties of his profession until his failing health compelled him to relinquish them. During 1847 Dr. FLECK was favorably known as one of the conductors, his friend Dr. EBDEN being the other, of the Cape Medical Gazette, which publication was discontinued on Dr. EBDEN’s departure for India at the close of that year. – Observer.

Wednesday 26 November 1851
The following, dated Eildon Nov 8th, referring to the late affair at that place, has been handed to us for publication:-
Robert PRINGLE had a narrow escape with his life last Sunday in a skirmish with the enemy. The rascals had taken a few sheep out of THOMAS’s kraal the night before, and were traced down about half way between his place and Eildon, where they had concealed themselves to feast upon the spoil. Our men, 14 in all, turned out to hunt them up, and soon found them roasting the mutton of six sheep they had killed. How many of the enemy were in the bush they could not tell, as only five spoors were with the sheep. THOMAS fired the first shot at them. Robert, who was close by him, was in the act of taking aim when he was fired at by the enemy, and dangerously wounded, but through the goodness of Almighty God he escaped with his life. One of our men was shot dead on the spot after Robert was hurt. Six of the party were from Cradock, but not of the brave Volunteers that were here first, or not one of the wretches would have escaped. Our men could not even bring away the dead body that night, as it was within a few paces of the villains’ guns. Poor Robert has got thirteen buckshot in his face, chest and left arm. We sent to Cradock for Dr. ARMSTRONG, who only came the day before yesterday. He has extracted some of the shot, and some have come out, but four are still in the arm and shoulder, as the Doctor did not think it advisable to meddle with them, they having apparently gone very deep. It gave him great pain in cutting them out, especially one in the forehead. One shot went through his upper lip at the nose, and came into his throat two days after. The Doctor says that in all his practice he never saw such a narrow escape. How thankful we ought to be that his life is spared; the other poor man was killed on the spot with one ball! The demon who shot Robert had intended his gun to do its work, as one musket and one pistol ball and five buckshot passed through the brim of his hat, bedsides all he received in his body. He still lives in a very precarious state. We sincerely trust in a kind and merciful God that his health will be restored.

VIOLENT THUNDERSTORM AT WORCESTER
On Saturday last, the 6th December, Worcester was visited by one of the most terrific thunder storms ever witnessed here. It began about 2 o’clock in the morning, and became very loud at about half past 3, at which time the rain came pouring down in torrents. Every succeeding clap of thunder was simultaneous with the lightning, clearly indicating that the seat of electric action was very near and consequently becoming dangerous. For a few moments it appeared to recede a little farther off, but only to return with renewed violence. About 6 o’clock the lightning struck the wagon-maker’s shop of Mr. Hendrik DE WET, on the north side of the town. The electric fluid entered the top of the gable and divided itself into two parts, one going down on each side of the building along the spars which were shattered to atoms; the thatch, fortunately being too wet from the previous rain, did not take fire, but the straw only a little singed. On entering the wall on the one side, the lightning rent it from top to bottom, while on the other it broke out a large piece of the wall, and then began to sport among some chisels, saws and other tools. The points of all were melted, those that contained brass or copper more so than the rest; whilst those that had wooden handles were not only melted on both ends, but the wood split quite through, without being burnt in the slightest degree. All these tools were rendered highly magnetic, and are now permanent magnets. The electric fluid appears to have been divided, by the tools, into various minor currents, some of which went through the wall; another passed along some iron rods, split a block of wood in contact with these rods, and then down into the ground, whilst another darted off in an opposite direction and killed a goat, which shortly before was tied in the shop by Mr. DE WET. The thunder continued with unabated violence until past 11am, though at 3 in the afternoon it was still audible. The rain was incessant all the time, the streets being quite flooded. The storm appears to have gone round and round in the direction in which the hands of a watch go.
