Yesterday Divine Service was held in the Dutch Reformed Churches – that being the Two Hundredth Anniversary of that Settlement. In the church of Cape Town an excellent discourse, most suitable in all respects to the occasion, was delivered by the Senior Minister, the Rev A. FAURE. He gave a rapid sketch of the history of the Church in this Colony – its early difficulties, its progress from small beginnings, and its present flourishing and hopeful condition, from which he deduced its duties, and pointed out the means by which it should devote itself to their fulfilment. It was distinguished by clear statements and generous sentiment, and would be peculiarly acceptable to the public at this moment in printed form. A collection was made in aid of a Theological Seminary - one duty of the Church.

A DEAF AND DUMB BRIDE
A motion was brought before the District Court on the 23rd instant for rule to compel the Rev H. PEARSE, Wesleyan Minister, to marry a private of the 45th Regt, to a woman deaf and dumb. Objection to the rule being granted was urged by the counsel of defendant on two grounds. 1 That the marriage of the parties had been prohibited by the Colonel of the regiment. 2 That Mr. PEARSE refused to marry them because they were not members of his congregation. The Recorder, in his judgement, noticed first the prohibition of the colonel, and after discussing the law of the case, gave it as his opinion that the parties were quite eligible for matrimony, and that no officer in Her Majesty’s service was competent to interfere between a subordinate and his civil privileges. The second point, which he pronounced of great importance, he considered at great length; and after showing that each minister of the different denominations was bound by law to perform on behalf of all persons, voluntarily or otherwise, under his charge, the several duties pertaining to his office; that it could not be expected that a person of the Roman Catholic persuasion should be at liberty whenever he might feel disposed to make a tool of any Protestant Minister; that the member of the flock must look to the pastor of the flock, and moreover that where a chaplain to the regiment was appointed, that he must be regarded as under obligation to perform the duties required by the regiment. That whether there was a chaplain here was not for him to enquire at present, but as the man was on the official record entered as an Episcopalian, and the parents of the woman as Roman Catholics, that Mr. PEARSE could not be compelled. The rule refused, and the application charged with costs.

Apropos of the above is the following from the Derbyshire Advertiser.
EXTRAORDINARY MARRIAGE SCENE: Married, Dec 8 at the Parish Church, Preston, Thomas REED to Maria CARNLEY. The bride and bridegroom were both deaf and dumb, natives of Preston, and formerly pupils of the deaf and dumb school of that town. The Rev S.F. PAGE, incumbent of St.Paul’s Church, who has taken much interest in the deaf and dumb school, performed the ceremony. Mr. WILSON, late master of the school, officiated as interpreter. Three groomsmen and three bridesmaids, all deaf and dumb, attended on the occasion, and there were also present a deaf and dumb couple who had been married about ten years ago at the parish church.

DISASTROUS FIRE
On Sunday last one of the most lamentable disasters which has ever occurred in this town was occasioned by fire. At about 1pm on Sunday morning the house adjoining that now occupied by Mr. SHORT, butcher, burst into flames, and in an incredible short space of time was entirely consumed, the sacrifice of property being attended with melancholy loss of life. The circumstances of the case are briefly these: At about the hour referred to a young man named BOWER was passing the house adjoining Mr. SHORT’s, which was a two-storied dwelling, when his attention was arrested by loud screams from its occupant (Mrs. YORKE), who appeared at one of the upper windows calling out that the house was on fire. Immediately afterwards she cast two of her younger children from the upper windows, who were successfully caught, without injury, by Mr. BOWER. While the unfortunate woman was still at the window the floor on which she was standing gave way under her feet, and her two elder children, one 7 years old, the other 9, sunk into the devouring flames. She had but just time to grasp the sill of the window and precipitate herself into the street before this frightful catastrophe took place. Although severely injured by the fall from so considerable a height, she uttered the most frantic appeals to save her two children, which for the moment were thought to be those she had cast into the street. When however the horrible truth became known, the most strenuous efforts were made to render assistance to the unfortunate little creatures, but of course without effect, as when the lower portion of the premises were burst open, the inside of the house was found to present a mass of flames.
A messenger was quickly dispatched to Mr. PIERS, of the Ordnance Department, who with his usual promptitude dispatched the Government fire-engine to the scene of the calamity. Unfortunately, however, the engine was found to be useless. Every effort was made by the neighbours (who exerted themselves most strenuously on the occasion) to extinguish the fire by means of buckets of water, but the efforts proved unavailing, and the fire burnt itself out, entirely gutting the whole premises, leaving only the four blackened walls standing. Great apprehensions were entertained for the safety of the adjoining premises, but owing to their being only one storey, and the burning house being two stories high, their roofs effectually protected them from any serious injury. The cause of the fire is still unexplained, but it is supposed to have arisen from the oven of a baker on the premises (Mr. POWELL), who with his apprentice effected their escape from the upper storey at the back by tying sheets together and letting themselves down. During Sunday, search was made in the ruins for the remains of the unfortunate children, and small portions of calcified bones &c were discovered buried in the ashes. About £30 out of £70 belonging to Mr. POWELL was also found. In the meantime the unfortunate woman, Mrs. YORKE, (whose husband is absent at Graaff-Reinet, where he has a shop) continued in the most precarious and deplorable state, suffering much from the burns she had sustained, and still more from the severe injuries she had received in her fall. The loss of her children has driven her to the verge of distraction, and their loss is rendered still more poignant inasmuch as one of them was the means of saving its mother’s life by awakening her and telling her that the house was on fire. We are happy to say the mother is now mending.
This terrible calamity has thrown a gloom over the whole community, and we trust that the impression produced will not be without its effects. A Fire Engine of power and capacity is an absolute necessity for this town, which in the event of conflagration is entirely at the mercy of the flames. A fire occurring in the same spot as it did a few years ago (Messrs KAY, HESS & Co) would with a strong S.E. gale in all probability entirely demolish the lower part of the town. The inhabitants, or if not the inhabitants the Insurance Companies, ought to look into this matter ere it be too late. We have had two warnings of our perilous position; let us beware how we risk a third, which may prove still more disastrous in its effects. A subscription ought immediately to be set on foot to purchase one or more efficient engines. Thousands of pounds are now at stake, and let us not proceed on the “penny wise and pound foolish” policy. The premises destroyed by this fire belonged to Mr. McCARTHY, and were entirely uninsured too. The unfortunate sufferers by this awful calamity lost everything in the fire with the exception of the money already referred. Such a calamity as this has not occurred in Port Elizabeth since its foundation.

My Dear Sir and Brother, I have to inform you that our beloved, venerable father Mr. READ Senior is now no more. He left us by death on the 8th current. His sickness was inflammation of the heart. I regret I am not able to state the particulars of his illness, for hitherto I have been prevented from going to see him, and thus have not enjoyed the privilege of interring him. My opportunities of going thither depended on occasional events. I feel the loss the more, as I had neither the opportunity of seeing him, nor burying him. But I am still waiting for an opportunity to go to Eiland’s Post to visit and console with Mr. J.V.D.K. READ and his sisters. I shall go to console them, though I myself feel the stroke so keenly.

The Kowie – The Improvement of this Estuary has met with considerable support at Bathurst, where a good many shares have been subscribed for, this being a locality anticipating great advantage from the opening of the above port. Some misunderstanding relative to the limiting of the number of shares subscribed for individually, in order to increase the number of persons interested, having been removed, we hope to hear of a still further amount of capital being raised amongst the community in question. Some who have already subscribed express their willingness to increase their quota if needed. To all who are so disposed we should urge their doing so at once, and to their utmost endeavour to further the undertaking by filling up the capital needed, bearing in mind that until the whole £25,000 is raised by shareholders, no assistance will be given by the Government, nor will the Ordinance come into full operation until that period.

KARRIEGA
June 2 – On Wednesday the 26th ult, about half past six in the evening, my son was returning from town, and when about three hundred yards from the house, another son of mine who was in the wagon saw persons in the road above them. He called to his brother to look out, and then jumped off and made for the house, while the other drove as hard as he could. Finding he was still followed, and that the marauders, who were then distinctly seen, were only about one hundred yards off, he called out “Father, bring the gun”, which I did, calling out several names to follow me. The marauders were then seen to turn from the road into a small bush. They were about fourteen in number. Having got the wagon safe home, and fearing an attack, I did not follow them. It is now eleven months since I returned to my place, and I consider there is more danger now than there has been since my return. I have also seen several fires, and fear I shall have again to leave. There is between my place and the sea a tract of country about twenty-five miles in length, and from eight to twelve miles in breadth, which contains but one farm house that has escaped the fire-brand of the enemy. I am well acquainted with this part, and think it has been overlooked. A post formed at the farm called “Wait’s” would, if on the hill, overlook the Karraa and the Karriega and Bushman’s Rivers. It is about eight miles from my place, and it would I have no doubt prove a great check to the enemy.
