DEATH
May 29: Edward Edge Moore WILLOUGHBY Esq, Major 18th Regt Bombay Native Infantry, aged 40 years.

An unfortunate man named SWEENEY, a cooper by trade, residing near Somerset Road, committed suicide last Sunday. He was, it is said in pecuniary difficulties; and, as is too often the case in such circumstances, had taken to drinking.
It is an instructive fact that of the 234 boys admitted, in a state of destitution or orphanage, into the Refuge for the Destitute in Glasgow, upwards of two thirds had been driven into poverty and crime by the drunkenness of their parents. Among the poor suicide is almost uniformly caused by drunkenness – a word which in most cases, indeed, the Coroners’ Juries might justly substitute for their common verdict of Insanity.

BEAUFORT. ADVENTURE WITH A TIGER
Communicated
19th May 1841
On the 4th inst a shepherd, residing at Drie Kop in the Nieuwveld, a farm belonging to Mr. John HARRIS, of Beaufort, was out looking after his flock. The three dogs he had with him fell in with a large Panther, or what is commonly called in this Colony a Tiger, in some bushes. A little boy was also in company with the man, whom he sent home for assistance. Mr. John MUSTO*, who had charge of the farm, proceeded to the spot immediately, followed by two persons of color, with guns. On arriving they found the dogs still had the tiger at bay. At last he sprang out of the bush; the dogs followed him but the party lost sight of him. On further search, and on coming near another bush, the tiger suddenly sprang out of it and made for the party. MUSTO and the shepherd, being warned, endeavoured to escape, and ordered the two men with guns to stand and fire. They were, however, so much frightened that they ran away also. MUSTO, in jumping over a bush, caught his foot in it and he fell. The tiger was upon him in a moment, seized him by the arm with his mouth, inflicted some severe scratches on his face and ear, and tore his clothes. As soon as he recovered himself he turned upon the tiger; seized him by the throat: threw him on his back: got on his legs, and gave him two severe tramps on his breast. The faithful shepherd remained by and rendered all the assistance he could. MUSTO requested his companion to get his knife, to cut the animal’s throat, but neither of them had one. They had then no other alternative but to call the two cowardly fellows, who had ran away, to come with their guns and shoot the tiger. After much calling they at last made their appearance and shot it. One dog was killed by the tiger and it is expected another is by this time dead. The tiger was a male.
It seems Mr. MUSTO received nine wounds in his arm. We are happy to say, by last accounts, we learn he is doing well.

[Transcriber’s Note: Apologies that at the time I photographed this I didn’t notice the asterisk after MUSTO’s name. The explanation of the asterisk appears at the foot of the adjacent column of print, but the photo has only captured half that column. All that can be read is “This young man some......accidental discharge of a gun....appeared in your Journal.”]
