FATAL ACCIDENT. – A melancholy death took place at Trumpetter’s Post, on Friday morning last, about a quarter to 1 o’clock. Color-Serjeant DUNLOP, of the 6th Regt., had paraded the guard about sun-set on Thursday evening, and, as was customary with him, he took his fowling-piece out a short distance from the post, (not more than 100 yards) and had placed a cap on the nipple, and was about to fire at some birds, when in passing through some low bush, the cock of the gun caught a twig of the bush and caused the gun to discharge. The butt of the gun being at this time opposite the lower part of his belly, or abdomen, when the gun discharged, - the recoil was so strong against the lower part of his belly, inclining to the left side, that it caused one of his intestines to burst immediately, and the poor fellow expired on Friday morning, - leaving a very young wife and four little children, (the eldest is about five years and a half old, and the youngest about eight or nine months – all girls). He was buried on Saturday at Fort Peddie, at 2 o’clock. I attended the funeral, and I assure you it almost made my heart bleed to see his poor wife in such despair. He was only 27 years of age, and his wife is not more than 22 or 23. It is the intention of the Regiment to assist her and her poor orphan children as far as possible. – [Communicated.]

She has the following passengers for the Cape:- Sir Robert STANDFORD; Rt. Rev. Dr. MORAN (R.C.B.); Rev. A. BAMPORT and F. BAMFORT, (R.C. Priests); Capt. And Mrs. FROST, Messrs. UPPLEBY, DOWLING, HAYTER, MOORE, PENNY and COURTNEY; Misses NORDEN and SINCLAIR; Dr. WILLIAMS, Deputy Inspector General of Hospitals; Major BATES and Mr. HAYWARD (45th Regt.); Lieut. Besides these she has seven passengers for Mauritius, three for Point de Galle, three for Madras, and five for Calcutta. We believe that the length of the Tynemouth’s voyage is attributed to her small horse-power, as, it is said, she cannot make greater progress than five knots an hour under steam alone. The mail for Mauritius and India, by this steamer, closes this afternoon, at 4 o’clock.

ANOTHER VICTIM TO KAFIR TREACHERY AND VIOLENCE
Extract of a letter from the Kat River, dated Tuesday afternoon, 18th of November, 1856 :-
“I have just returned from the funeral of Mr. John SELBY, formerly an inhabitant of Lower Albany, but for the last two years resident in this district as a grantee under the late Sir. Geo. CATHCART’s system. It will be remembered, that, about two months ago, Mr. SELBY proceeded from the Kat River to King William’s Town with some produce for sale. On his return, he outspanned just outside of the town, tied up his oxen for the night, and laid down on the ground at the back of his wagon to sleep. During the night he awoke, as he himself described it, feeling a choking sensation, and in putting up his hand, he found his forehead, &c., covered with blood. On looking about he missed two pillows, two blankets, and a plaid shooting coat which he had taken off upon lying down. It appears that some ruffian, doubtless a Kafir, had struck the unfortunate man whilst asleep, a severe blow over the left eye, with a knob-kerrie, or other heavy instrument, which completely stunned him, for he could not even tell when he received the blow. He returned home as fast as he could, - and continued to linger on, most of the time confined to his bed and occasionally in pain from the wound, until Sunday evening last, 16th inst., when he expired without a struggle, leaving a widow (a daughter of Mr. JAMES; head of James’ party, a British Settler,) and nine children to deplore the loss of a good husband, and a kind and affectionate father. His remains were this afternoon conveyed to the silent tomb, followed by the Magistrate of the district, his clerk, the English inhabitants residing at, and in the vicinity of the village of Seymour, and most of the men of the detachment of the 45th Regt., stationed at Eland’s River Port, several of these men belong to the Wesleyan Church, of which deceased was a consistent member. Matter had formed on the brain, and after death it was found that the skull was fractured.

[Note from Lynne MacLeod, who transcribed the above report: This is not totally correct. John SELBY was married to Sarah RANDALL d.o. James & Rebecca RANDALL, 1820 settlers, but widow of Edward JAMES s.o. Samuel Taylor & Elizabeth JAMES. She then went on to marry William Walter BRADLEY, widower of Eleanor Jane STAPLES.]
